OrbitDrop by StTheo OrbitDrop by StTheo
been having lots of fun adding stuff to the hardware universe so heres a quick one, a high orbit cargo aircraft dropping some glider troops who are about to secure a shipwreck

i have been massive fan of the homeworld games which have been very influential to me, so when i heard of the new title being made "Hardware" by alot of the great devs of homeworld one of which is the brilliant rob cunningham and awsome art by Cody Kenworthy [link] i was instantly interested. i havent been this excited in a project in a long long time so decided to design some stuff in the Hardware universe [link]
tried to simplify my design style a bit

cheers for looking

Why does it look like a decapitated fighter?

great looking piece, but i can't help but wonder why a super stealthy designed aircraft would have super radar-visible CWIS stuck on the outside... its like mounting external fuel tanks on a F117. cool looking though.

thats very true, i called it the rad  factor in concept art, personally i don't want to go to realistic nor to fantasy so try skirt in the middle

I can't wait for Hardware! I hope it'll be every bit as good as homeworld!
Nice art by the way.

Does this thing have a pilot or is it more of a drone?

I would, at first glance, think its shape would create more wind resistance thus upping the fuel consumption compared to a more arrowhead design, but with its body shape, it's possible that it could use a gliding technique to sorta coast across distance with minimal fuel consumption.

thats exactly it, its flying/ gliding and subsonic speeds droping troops and cargo

A greatly design/drawn pic. I wish I had the skills for this cuz I have just roughly drawn sketches/blueprint designs of a massive air ship that's gonna be in a story I'm currently writing. It saddens me that my artistic skills are far too inferior to draw my imagination. It's like a cruel, horrible joke, like an artist with no functions to his arms.

Love the addition of the phalanx turrets, I don't know why more big military planes these days don't have anti missile/anti fighter turrets, going back to WW2 most allied bombers bristled with them. I'm sure they detract from aerodynamic efficiency but if your going slower than interceptors anyway, so what, at least you have a chance to shoot something down that might otherwise kill you. I remember Dale Brown, a former B-52 crewman, wrote some novels where he suggested mods to several bomber types to turn them into 'air fortresses'. Are the engines on your design intended to represent scramjets?

Not too far away, possibly still within this century, our Air Force and Navy pilots for fighters might be advanced enough to implement direct energy weapon defenses/offensive weaponry for either fighters or bombers. I believe the jet in theory was dubbed 'Scramjet.'

If going back to Ww2 you could find big planes with turrets, it's because there wasn't any long-range fighter able to secure.

The P-51 Mustang was a bomber escort later in WW2, but turrets still persisted into the 1950's bomber designs such as the B-36, the Russian 'Bear', even the early B-52 marks still had tail guns I believe. Just saying that with modern radar aiming such as the Phalanx or Goalkeeper systems they might be of some use as anti AAM weapons, which would be the main threat to slow movers. I'm sure they could be miniaturised to smaller calibres as similar systems are being tried on tanks now.

Cool design! I read the Hardware devs were picked up by Gearbox, who owns the Homeworld name if I remember correctly, so now it's going to be Homeword: Shipbreakers. Must be nice for the team to be able to have the original name back.

I like this design but the ammo drums are exposed and vulnerable to fire which would render the aircraft defenseless.

I'm not the artist, obviously, but if you mean the white domes above the weapons systems, then StTheo has clearly taken inspiration from the Phalanx and Goalkeeper naval 'Close in Weapons Systems' or CIWS used for missile defence. In that case, the white drums are more likely to be fire control radars, not ammo ... which, admittedly, if taken out would also render it defenceless, but that only just occured to me. They are also a bit unaerodynamic, surely.
