You see legged vehicles so often in scifi. But I don't think they would be a good idea for anything beyond the big dog concept. At fast speed legs are problematic. Whegs would be far superior. You can go faster. The ride would be smoother. It would be far cheaper and easier to repair. Wheels, treads, and whegs are far less susceptible to damage than legs. I have seen at least three different versions of whegs and don't think the concept has been fully explored yet. I have thought of some versions of whegs that I have not seen on robots yet that think would work well. www.i-programmer.info/news/169… www.ttu.ee/innovation/success/… biorobots.case.edu/projects/wh… www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBc…
It's true that they are more susceptible to damage, but they do have some very good features worth noting. Though I just thought about it looking at the picture, a legged vehicle has the ability to transport large payloads without taking up the same amount of space on the ground. In other words, whereas a tank has to displace the immediate area upon the ground equal to its size, the walking machine only needs to take up the space required for its legs. So you would be able to have vehicles or personnel take shelter or move in formation underneath the legged vehicle. Transport would still be an issue, but with the proper design, you could still be able to fold the legs up. As well as the fact that unlike a tank, you can actually bypass structures and objects without having to run them over. If a tank wanted to bypass a barricade or roadblock, it would have to run over and flatten something to do it. However a walking vehicle can position itself so as to get around without having to cause such destruction. Not to mention the overall maneuverability of the machine itself.
Also they have the ability of controlling their elevation. Where as a tank has to move to the top of a hill, a legged vehicle can simply stand up or crouch down. Multiple legs allow a legged vehicle to still be able to move, whereas a tank that has lost a track becomes immobilized. Legs are slow, but certain designs can and do incorporate wheels at the base to allow for a more streamline and quicker ride. The biggest issue is weight. Future technology and materials would certainly make them more viable; but currently you'd never get a walking machine to carry the same amount as a tracked or wheeled vehicle without running the risk of mechanical failures or far too many repairs. More moving parts also means more possibilies for malfunctions.
Legged vehicles and machines can be made to outperform traditional means of transportation (with regards to military maneuvers and operations) but they are also going to be far more fragile and require stricter operational guild lines.
The picture itself is excellently well done, like pretty much all your art, but I can't abide by walker-class vehicles really. Each of those six legs has eight pressure-points between joints that might fail or get hit at any time. The vehicle is easily ten to twenty time a human's height, and easy to see and hear and feel (shaking ground) from miles away. While it's tower's main-gun looks highly powerful, the caliber looks to have issues piercing comparable armor (unless it's a sort of specialized ammo like HEAP rounds or anything similar. Several smaller turrets for point-defense. Nice idea to cover the dead angles the main gun likely can't see, but the scale of this thing is still absurd.
Yeah by now I think you get what my issue is We will likely never see anything like this be made and utilized by a real military simply for how absurdly expensive it would be to make, and how impractical it would be on a battlefield.
Well. I have a hard time finding legit military looking pictures on here, like...Todays military not so much of future or past soldiers so. I'm not in a stable financial situation to pay you to sketch out my idea...But, if you would maybe like to hear it out and consider it?..that'd be awesome. I roleplay a lot and people love a well layed out profile so..I'm looking for some awesome images.
Hey man, my model is basically complete. I made one a bit differently now. [link] Could you please have a look. If u think its ok then i would like to put a link on it to ur picture. (if it sucks too much i wont link it to urs) I will eventually re make it to make it look more like yours. Will get around to it soon.
Nice stuff man! I like the direction u went with within your universe. From wat i can see u could widen the main turret to, it would create a nicer silhouette? Are u going to texture it or just add color to it like a desert pattern?
